Longnook Beach

Silhouette of a running man

Naturist New Hampshire invites people to join in a visit to Longnook Beach, part of the Cape Cod National Seashore in Truro MA, on Saturday, September 13. Come for the day or make a weekend of it, staying at a local campground or motel.

Longnook Beach is known for its large sand dunes and isolated, wild feel, with an unofficial nude sunbathing area. Access is down a steep path, making it difficult for those with mobility problems.

Officially, nudity is banned on beaches on the Cape Cod National Seashore, but park rangers generally do not enforce the ban on nude sunbathers. It is a good idea to be prepared to cover up to avoid any conflict.

The parking lot accommodates about 50 cars and includes handicapped parking. The lot can fill up quickly, so plan to arrive early to secure a spot. After Labor Day, no beach permit is needed.

A portable toilet is available in-season, and is likely to remain there through September.

From the parking lot, it is about a half-mile walk to the beach. Once at the base of the ramp, it is an easy walk north (to the right) for 10 to 15 minutes to reach the nude section, which lies against spectacular sand cliffs.

Preparations

Bring everything you need for several hours’ stay. Pack a cover-up in the event of a cool sea breeze or too much sun, sunscreen (SPF 35 or higher recommended), bathing suit for off-site movements, snacks or lunch, and plenty of liquid refreshments. We also recommend some good sandals or sneakers.

Accommodations

For a longer visit, there are options such as staying at North Truro Campground (aka Adventure Bound Campground, 508-487-1847) which has a pleasant, mostly level mile-long path through the woods, leading to Coast Guard Beach, with another half- to three-quarters of a mile walk to reach the north end of Longnook Beach.

For those not into camping, the Wellfleet Motel & Lodge offers a wide range of on-site amenities on 12 scenic acres. It is family-owned and family-focused. (https://www.wellfleetmotel.com, 508.349.3535).
